HISD sent out surveys all through October to gather information from parents on their opinions on the new starting times.

The school district currently manages 67 different school start times.

With 4 different options displayed, option 4 won with 51% votes, which read elementary school hours are from 7:30a.m-2:50p.m, middle schools are from 8:30a.m-3:50p.m, and high schools are from 8:30a.m-3:50p.m, as well.

“Standardizing school start times will bring efficiencies to the district’s bus routes and ensure that students arrive to campus and depart on time, resulting in fewer interruptions to teaching, learning, and family schedules,” KHOU.com said. “The new start times will also extend the life of the district’s bus fleet and reduce maintenance and fuel costs.”

They later went on to inform the parents and students, about the times they had finally agreed on.

The 2018-19 school year starting times were said to be changed to the following:

7:30 a.m.-2:50 p.m. for elementary schools and K-8 campuses
8:30 a.m.-3:50 p.m. for all secondary campuses (middle school, high school, and grade 6-12 campuses)

This would affect students by allowing them to sleep longer, and affect parents by making them have to find new transportation home for their kids.

However, LCISD has not said anything about changing the times even though some students believe it would be beneficial.

“Students’ should start school later in the day because children’s brains are not fully awake at 8:15 am,” sophomore Olive Okoro said. “The students would feel better because it matches most parents’ work schedules, and they have more time to get prepared on the day ahead.”
