On February 23 and 24, the state wrestling tournament was held at the Berry Center in Cypress, Texas. At the tournament, 16 wrestlers of each weight class competed against one another. To be awarded a medal and a place on the podium, a wrestler needed to make 1st-6th place. The Falcons came through, as 2 of the wrestlers made the top 6. Junior Valerie Carreon made 6th place, and Sophomore Chidozie “Dot” Nwankwo won 1st, winning Foster its 3rd gold medal in 3 years.

Besides Nwankwo and Carreon, juniors Marisol Romo and Cole Becker competed and made it into the top 10 out of 16. Then, Carreon and Nwankwo advanced to the second day of the tournament. By the end of the tournament, Carreon and Nwankwo’s triumph in the the tough battle had made them medalists in the state championship.

“When I was standing at the podium, I thought, ‘This is crazy,’ because I didn’t place last year, and it was hard for me to stand in front of all those people,” Carreon said. “You’re standing there and you know you’re up there with the best wrestlers and the best coaches in the state. Your mind goes blank.”

There are different types of wrestling. Now that state championships are over, the season for folkstyle wrestling is over, and it’s time for the wrestlers to practice freestyle or Greco-Roman wrestling styles. Wrestlers are already preparing for upcoming events scheduled in their chosen style. When the 2018-2019 school year starts, the wrestlers will resume practicing folkstyle.
