Senior Meagan Clark, junior Sophie Gibson, junior Maddie Jacks and freshman Kalissa Niles won a silver medal for their 200 freestyle relay at the state swim meet last week.

“Going into state, we had to redo our training, and then get them ready to be able to race,” Coach Emily Regetz said. “We had about two weeks between regional and state, so we had two weeks  to prepare. We gave the kids goal times, kinda where we expected them to be, but we didn’t want to stress everyone out. We told them this was an opportunity to have fun on a big stage.”

In each practice, according to Niles, the students worked on lots of technique, breathing, and sprint work.

According to Coach Regetz, just the fact that so many students made it to state was exciting.

“It really shows the dedication that these athletes have,” Coach Regetz said. “It’s been a long time since Foster has been able to send a bunch of kids to state. We’ve gotten more and more kids to qualify for the state meet. It just shows that our program is going in the right direction.”

Niles agreed with Coach Regetz.

“I didn’t think, as being a freshman, I’d be able to go,” Niles said. “It was very exciting.”

Coach Regetz said it was even more awesome for the girls to get a medal.

“Foster hasn’t brought home a medal from the state swim meet since 2009,” Coach Regetz said. “You could see that these kids have worked for this, and they were so proud of themselves.”

The athletes themselves agreed with Coach Regetz’s excitement.

“There are just no words to describe how awesome it was,” Niles said. “It was just amazing.”

Even though this swim season is over, the coaches and athletes believe that next year they’ll do even better.

“We’re about to make a lot of waves next year,” Clark said.
