The members of Academic Decathlon recently went to state competition over the weekend of February 23rd and 24th. The competition was held in Frisco, Texas.

There was one student to medal from Foster’s team. Sarah Maher medaled in the Interview competition after achieving a perfect score.

“I think I was really honest in my interview and they appreciated it, so I earned a medal,” Maher said.

Although she was the only student to medal, most other students scored high on their competitions. All events, which include an interview, a prepared speech and an impromptu speech, tests over math, science, social science, literature, art, economics and music, are individually scored out of 1,000 points.

“I did better than expected on quite a few tests,” senior Saul Nguyen said. “I did pretty well, I got into the 90 percent. Pretty much all of us [on the team] improved.”

The team prepared for their state competition by practicing both individually and as a team. They would have team practices over weekends and study sessions together, as well as individually running through their speeches and review the information for the subject tests.

This entire year, Academic Decathlon was focused around the topic of Africa.

“The experience was pretty fun because the topic was Africa and I am African so I got to learn about some of my history a little bit,” senior Obaro Erigha said. “Even though my area wasn’t the most focused on, it did help to learn about my background and people around me.”

Overall, the team felt that their state competition was fun and as if the experience was beneficial.

“It was a pretty good experience,” Nguyen said. “I have a lot more knowledge now just from this class and better test taking skills, it was fun.”
