Speech and Debate competed on Tuesday, March 27 and left their mark in districts.

  • Senior Leo Pratt, placed 1st in poetry.
  • Sophomore Tiffany Hoang, placed 2nd in poetry.
  • Senior Sammy Sarabia, placed 5th in poetry.
  • Sophomore Emily Gay, placed 5th in prose.
  • Senior Noah Fisher, placed 1st in LD debate.
  • Junior John Ilao, placed 6th in informative speaking.

Hoang shares her experience was and her goals regarding the club.

Q: How did you prepare?

A: There wasn’t much of preparing. I just followed the guidelines of the event I was competing in. I prepared two pieces of poems with introductions.

Q: What was your debate or speech about?

A: I competed in the poetry event for speech and my Category A was about “American Assimilation of Asian Names Throughout History” and my Category B was “Taking a Stand Against Rape and Sexual Assault.”

Q: How did you feel right before and why?

A: Entering the competition, I thought I was going to be quite nervous. However, after a considerate amount of rehearsing, I felt confident going into my pre-lim round and finals.

Q: What is your goal for next time?

A: I really hope I am able to convey the stories of the characters I am portraying through these poems accurately and truthfully during regions. My Category B is the hardest of the two, because I have to reenact the memories of being raped (something I have absolutely no experience with). I have to be extremely careful and precise about my blocking and the control of my emotions to accurately tell the author’s story and the story of so many others. This is a REAL situation that REAL people have gone through, and I wouldn’t want to downplay the emotions that these people felt while going through such an awful and traumatizing experience.
