Featured Falcon: Devine Ogbuagu

Devine Ogbuagu has a passion for soccer which is something that will live with him for the rest of his life. To some people it’s just a sport but to him it’s his comforter and stress reliever.

“Soccer means a lot to me,” he said. “Whenever I play it comforts and suppresses most of my problems.”

Ogbuagu has had this passion for soccer since he was 5 years old. After playing from the age of 5 with his dad, he’s in the process of deciding to continue this journey for the rest of his life, hoping he will find a university that will meet his athletic and educational potential in one.

“I would describe soccer as a very hostile game and it feels somewhat like you’re on a battlefield,” Ogubagu said.

A big part of soccer for him is the atmosphere on the field.

“I play every position meaning utility player but the position I play the most would be midfield,” he said. “The sweat, the running, jumping, and kicking all keeps him hungry for more of the game. In one game, I’ve scored 3 goals. Soccer isn’t just something you can walk into, In school we train 2 times a week which is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6. We practice shooting drills, passing drills, and defending drills.”

Training and balancing school work isn’t easy while taking AP classes.

“All you honestly have to do is manage your time well,” he said. “It’s all about time management. You have to learn how to stay focused to make good grades, and stay fit.

Hard work and persistence is what he follows when soccer season starts.

Although he is graduating this year he encourages others to, “work hard and play hard. Make sure you keep your grades up and practice on your free time because it’ll only make you better.”
